heart of gold,
mouth of a sailor

Hi, I’m John. (As a designer, I’m required by law to start my about page this way.)

I am an interdisciplinary designer who cares deeply about the impact my work has on the people who use it, the people I build it with, and the larger world. I approach my work with care, curiosity, and the occasional f-bomb (hey, I’m passionate).

I lead design systems at Stitch Fix and have had my hands in a little bit of everything along the way. I’ve done brand, web, motion, and print, written, taught—and worked retail. I’ve picked up a set of skills greater than the sum of my job titles that makes me an adaptable designer—and I’m always picking up more.

Career Highlights

A grid of old work, posters, graphics, logos, etc.
  • Leading the design of Stitch Fix’s consumer-facing design system, taking it from a Sketch sticker sheet, to a robust, multiplatform system, founding a team to continue its growth
  • Co-founding Queer Design Club, an online community for LGBTQ+ people in design that now boasts nearly 3,000 members in its Slack and over 1,100 professionals in its talent directory
  • Launching the inaugural Queer Design Count, a field-wide research project looking at the queer experience in design
  • Being a Mule Design alum (even if I did have to apply multiple times)
  • Seeing the identity I designed for the 2016 International AIDS conference posted all over South Africa
  • Designing HIV/AIDS outreach and education materials used internationally

Pictured: Scattered work from the early days of my career to today. Some of the pieces I had the most fun doing, even if they don’t make it to a case study.
